Orsini-Colonna Castle
A medieval fortress reflecting centuries of architectural heritage and local history, the Orsini Castle of Avezzano, built in the 15th century by the powerful Orsini family, lords of Marsica, was severely damaged by the devastating earthquake of 1915, which almost entirely destroyed the city. It is one of the few structures to survive the earthquake and stands as a symbolic testimony to Avezzano's history and tragedy.
Alba Fucens
Alba Fucens is an ancient Roman colony founded in 303 BC, located approximately 1,000 meters above sea level in the Massa d'Albe (L'Aquila) area of Abruzzo. Thanks to its strategic position along the Via Valeria, it was an important military and commercial outpost in the Marsi territory. Among the most significant remains are polygonal walls, a forum, an amphitheater, and the Basilica of St. Peter, built on a Roman temple. Abandoned in the Middle Ages, it was rediscovered thanks to Belgian-Italian excavations in the 1950s. It is now considered one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in Abruzzo.
Celano
Celano is a municipality in the Abruzzo region of the province of L'Aquila, located on the slopes of Mount Sirente at approximately 800 meters above sea level, overlooking the Fucino plateau. It is dominated by the majestic Piccolomini Castle, a 15th-century medieval fortress now home to a diocesan museum of sacred art. The surrounding area offers notable natural attractions, including the famous Celano Gorges, a spectacular limestone gorge that opens towards the Marsica region. The town is also close to the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, a destination for hikers and nature lovers. With its ancient roots dating back to the Marsi people, Celano is an important historical and cultural center in the Marsica region.
Ovindoli
Ovindoli is a mountain village in the province of L'Aquila, located on the Rocche Plateau at approximately 1,375 meters above sea level. It is one of the most popular ski resorts in Abruzzo, thanks to the facilities on Monte Magnola, and is also a popular summer tourist destination for excursions and trekking in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park.
Tagliacozzo
Tagliacozzo is a charming medieval village in the province of L'Aquila, known for its well-preserved historic center with noble palaces, churches, and the charming Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi. It is famous for the Battle of Tagliacozzo in 1268, in which Charles of Anjou defeated Conradin of Swabia, marking the end of the Swabian dynasty in Italy. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Marsica region.
